    why spay & neuter

Services: Safe and Effective Spay & Neuter for Pets

Spaying and neutering is the most effective solution to pet overpopulation, which impacts thousands of pets in the Atlanta area each year. At Planned PEThood, we offer affordable, high-quality sterilization services for both cats and dogs, helping to reduce unwanted litters while improving the health and behavior of your furry friends. By choosing to spay or neuter your pet, you’re supporting their long-term health and well-being while also making a positive impact on the community.

    Why Spay or Neuter?

Pet overpopulation is a serious issue, with more dogs and cats than there are permanent homes. In the greater Atlanta area, thousands of pets end up in shelters each year, and many are euthanized due to lack of space. Uncontrolled breeding is the root cause of this problem, but the solution is simple: responsible pet guardianship through spay and neuter.

    Health Benefits for Your Pet

Spaying & neutering not only prevent unwanted litters but also reduce the risk of life-threatening conditions such as uterine, breast, or testicular cancer. In unneutered male pets, prostate problems are more common, while females are at risk for pyometra, a severe uterine infection that can be fatal if untreated. Additionally, spaying & neutering curbs undesirable behaviors like roaming, spraying, and aggression, making your pet easier to live with.

    Why It’s Good for You

Sterilizing your pet also brings benefits to pet owners. In many cities, it’s required by law, and shelters must spay or neuter pets before adoption. For female dogs, spaying eliminates their messy heat cycles, while female cats avoid frequent heat-related behaviors like howling, marking, and escaping. You’ll also have peace of mind knowing you won’t face an accidental litter of kittens or puppies that need care and rehoming.

    Benefits of Spaying (Females):

    • Prevents heat cycles, keeping unwanted male attention away
    • Reduces the risk of mammary gland tumors, ovarian, and uterine cancer
    • Decreases the desire to roam, reducing the chance of injury
    • Helps your pet live a longer, healthier life

    Benefits of Neutering (Males):

    • Reduces or eliminates spraying and marking behaviors
    • Lowers aggression and roaming tendencies, decreasing the risk of injury
    • Eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and reduces prostate issues
    • Improves your pet’s overall health and longevity

Top Reasons to Spay & Neuter

The sheer number of pets entering Georgia shelters is staggering. Each year, over 150,000 dogs and cats are euthanized due to overpopulation. The best way to reduce this number is through affordable spay and neuter services. Planned PEThood is dedicated to providing these critical services to ensure fewer animals enter shelters.

Sterilizing your pet also increases their lifespan. Dogs can live 1 to 3 years longer, while cats can enjoy an additional 3 to 5 years. Altered pets face fewer health risks and are less likely to roam, reducing their chances of being injured or contracting diseases. Studies show that as many as 85% of dogs hit by cars are unaltered, and intact male cats living outdoors have an average lifespan of less than two years. Neutering your pet significantly decreases these risks and helps them live a healthier, happier life.

Your Trusted Spay and Neuter Clinic in Duluth

“A pregnant cat appeared at my door right before the winter cold snap. I didn’t realize the cat was pregnant until a week ago. Many resources in Atlanta turned me away and offered no help. Planned PEThood got me an immediate spay the very next day. The staff is so helpful and professional. Location is close to highways. Amazing facility.”

      – Vanessa E.

“If I could give all the stars in the world, I would. My fur baby had Pyometra. This clinic saved her life. I will be forever thankful and grateful. The staff is excellent. I communicated with Anna and Jacqueline, they are amazing. I recommend this clinic to ANYONE!”

      – Tonya Newton

“This clinic does so much good for the community. Low cost spay and neuter is helpful when you move to a new house with a colony of a dozen or two feral cats. I’ve had 14 of my ferals fixed through planned PEThood and another stray dog we adopted. Thank you so much for all the work you all do on a daily basis. Georgia is in a better space today because of you all.”

    pre & post op instructions

What to Know Before and After Surgery

Following the pre- and post-operative instructions is critical to your pet’s recovery. If you have any questions or notice unusual changes in your pet’s condition after surgery, don’t hesitate to contact us. For emergencies outside of our clinic hours, please use the emergency contact information listed below.

    Pre-Op Instructions:

    • Adult cats and dogs must be fasted before surgery. No food after midnight the night before surgery. Small amounts of water are fine.
    • Kittens and puppies younger than 16 weeks can have a small snack (1 tsp or less) before 6 a.m. the morning of surgery, with very small amounts of water.
    • Walk dogs as usual on the morning of surgery.
    • Leave dogs in the car when you check in at Planned PEThood.
    • Cats must be in a secure carrier or trap upon arrival. One cat per carrier. If you don’t have one, we offer cardboard carriers for $15 (for owned cats only).

    Post-Op Instructions:

    • Keep your pet calm. No running, jumping, playing, or other strenuous activity for 7 to 10 days.
    • Pets must remain indoors to stay clean, dry, and warm. No baths during the recovery period. Dogs must be walked on a leash; cats should stay indoors.
    • Feed your pet a half portion of their regular meal the evening after surgery. Return to normal feeding portions the next day.
    • Check the incision site twice daily for any signs of drainage or significant redness/swelling. Don’t let your pet lick or chew the incision. We strongly recommend using an Elizabethan collar (cone) to prevent this.
    • A tattoo near the incision is not an additional cut—it’s simply a small mark to indicate your pet has been spayed or neutered. Skin glue may appear purple or brown.
    • If your pet’s appetite doesn’t return within 24 hours or they show signs of lethargy, diarrhea, or vomiting, contact your regular veterinarian immediately.
    • Avoid giving your pet junk food, table scraps, or milk during recovery, as it could mask complications.
    • We recommend scheduling a post-op exam with your regular veterinarian within 7 to 10 days to check the incision and discuss follow-up care.

    Additional Guidelines:

    • Dogs in heat: Keep separated from unneutered males for 30 days post-surgery.
    • Cats: Use pellet-type litter (such as Feline Pine) or shredded paper for 4 days after surgery.
    • Community Cats (feral cats and friendly strays): Hold males for at least 24 hours and females for 72 hours before releasing them.

    After-Hours Emergencies:

Planned PEThood cannot be held responsible for complications that result from failing to follow post-op instructions or for contagious diseases that were not previously vaccinated against. We will treat post-op complications directly related to surgery at minimal cost if the above instructions are followed. Any other illnesses or injuries should be addressed by your regular veterinarian.
