Providing Outreach for Pets in Need
At Planned PEThood of Georgia, we believe every pet deserves access to essential veterinary care, regardless of location or financial situation. That’s why our outreach team travels across North Georgia to provide critical services to pet owners in need. These include free vaccines, microchips, flea preventative, spay and neuter vouchers, and more.
Our outreach events are designed to remove barriers to veterinary care in underserved communities, where access to affordable vet services is often limited or non-existent. By offering these free and low-cost services, we ensure that pets receive the care they need to live healthy lives, while also addressing the larger issue of pet overpopulation through accessible spay and neuter programs.
Each event is an opportunity to connect with pet owners who may not be able to take their pets to a veterinarian. We see firsthand the gratitude and relief of families who now have peace of mind knowing their pets are protected and healthy. Our outreach efforts are not just about providing a service. They are about building stronger, healthier communities by ensuring that pets remain in loving homes and out of overcrowded shelters.
With the support of local organizations and generous volunteers, our outreach program delivers essential care to pets in need across the community. If you have any questions about our Community Outreach programs email outreach@PEThoodGa.org.

go fix georgia
Bringing Veterinary Care to Underserved Areas
The Go Fix Georgia program was launched in 2019 to expand access to affordable spay and neuter services and essential veterinary care for rural shelters and communities across Georgia. While metro-Atlanta counties like Fulton, Gwinnett, and Dekalb offer veterinary services such as spay and neuter, vaccinations, and microchipping, many counties just outside the city—like Newton, Habersham, and Rockdale—lack these vital resources.
Before Go Fix Georgia, these counties faced difficult choices: either euthanize animals or adopt them out without basic veterinary care, contributing to Georgia’s pet overpopulation crisis. This innovative program now fills that critical gap by transporting animals to Planned PEThood’s low-cost spay and neuter clinic for treatment before adoption.
Our program operates with one key rule: Every animal that enters Go Fix Georgia is guaranteed safety. That means each pet will either be adopted or placed with a rescue group. In addition to providing necessary medical care, we work closely with shelters to find rescue placements for emergency medical cases, offering transport and even bringing some animals into our own rescue program.
Planned PEThood also partners with local rescue organizations to help them pull animals from county shelters, making it easier to transfer more pets out of overcrowded facilities. This collaboration allows us to increase rescue efforts, particularly in areas where resources are limited.
Our goal is to expand this program to other rural counties and underserved areas throughout Georgia. With increased access to affordable spay and neuter services, we aim to reduce the state’s pet overpopulation problem, which still leads to the deaths of at least 40,000 cats and dogs in Georgia shelters each year.
History and Program Success:
- In June 2019, we partnered with Newton County leadership to raise adoption fees at Newton County Animal Control, ensuring that all animals leaving the shelter are spayed/neutered and vaccinated.
- The program was initially funded by an innovation grant from Maddie’s Fund and sustained by a Rachel Ray Save Them All Grant from Best Friends Animal Society.
- Since 2019, after our work with Newton County Animal Control, the euthanasia rate dropped from nearly 75% to under 25%, resulting in a significant increase in lives saved.
- In 2020, Habersham County Animal Control and Athens-Clarke County Animal Control joined the program, including outreach events to provide additional services to the community.
