Oliver: The Fearless Fighter
Success Stories
When tiny kitten Oliver arrived at Planned PEThood of Georgia, he was just eight weeks old and already a fighter.
Oliver initially seemed like just another sweet baby getting ready for his neuter appointment. But during his pre-surgery exam, something gave us pause: Oliver still didn’t weigh enough for his procedure, and while being handled, he showed signs of increased respiratory effort. Something wasn’t right.
Further evaluation and urgent X-rays at a partner veterinary clinic confirmed our concern – Oliver had pectus excavatum, a rare congenital deformity that caused his ribcage to press in on his lungs and shift his heart from its normal position. Though he had been growing alongside his siblings, this condition had been silently threatening his health all along.
Without surgical correction, Oliver faced a lifetime of compromised breathing and the risk of worsening symptoms. But there was hope. Despite his condition, Oliver was otherwise healthy and had a strong prognosis if we could act quickly.
Thanks to a Mighty Cat Grant from Orphan Kitten Club , Oliver received the life-saving surgery he needed. He recovered like a champ, had his surgical plate removed – and now he’s living his best life in a loving forever home. So many folks helped make this possible, from the caring and talented Dr. Joncas at Planned PEThood, who fostered and took care of Oliver through his recovery, to the amazing staff at UGA who performed this delicate surgery, to our always awesome foster/adoption team.
Oliver’s story is a powerful reminder of how second chances, and the people and partners who make them possible, can change everything. We’re incredibly grateful to the Orphan Kitten Club for stepping in when Oliver needed it most.
