IRA Rollover

If you’re 70 and a half or older, you have the option to donate up to $105,000 per year directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to charitable organizations like Planned PEThood.

Qualified Charitable Deductions (“QCDs”), sometimes referred to as IRA charitable rollovers or IRA donations, provide a beneficial way to support our work in animal rescue. These contributions can be excluded from your taxable income and may also satisfy your required minimum distribution (“RMD”) for the year, maximizing the impact of your generosity.

How do QCDs/IRA Charitable Rollovers Work?

Here is an overview of the key rules for QCDs:

Eligibility: You must be at least 70 and a half years old at the time of the donation to qualify.

Annual Cap: You’re allowed to donate up to $105,000 from your IRA within a calendar year to one or more eligible charities. The donation must be completed by December 31.

Direct Transfer Requirement: The funds must be transferred directly from your IRA administrator to the charity, or you can write a check from your IRA checkbook. If you withdraw the funds and then donate them, the donation will not qualify as a QCD.

Advantages of a QCD Donation

QCDs can be applied to your required minimum distribution (“RMD”) for the year. If you are required to take an RMD but don’t need the funds, QCDs offer a meaningful way to fulfill this requirement while supporting a cause you believe in. Plus, by donating up to $105,000, you can avoid having the distribution included in your gross income.

QCD Restrictions to Consider

Per IRS guidelines, QCDs cannot be directed to a donor-advised fund (“DAF”). However, you can direct a QCD to a qualified 501(c)(3) organization, such as Planned PEThood, as long as it’s intended for general support or specific programs outside of DAF.

For more details on QCDs and DAFs, please reach out to a financial advisor or charitable sponsor.

Steps to Make an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution

To make a donation from your IRA, follow these steps:

  • Contact your IRA Administrator: Provide instructions for transferring funds directly to the charity you choose.
  • Include Your Details: Ask your IRA administrator to include your full name and mailing address with the gift, and ensure it’s marked as an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution.

If you plan to make a QCD donation to Planned PEThood of Georgia, your financial institution should issue the check payable to “Planned PEThood of Georgia” and identify you as the donor.
