What are Heartworms?
Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal illness affecting dogs and cats. Here in North Georgia, there is a higher incidence of heartworm disease compared with many other parts of the country. Mosquitoes are responsible for spreading the disease. Heartworms live in the heart, lungs and blood vessels of affected animals, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs.
Treatment for infected dogs is available but may have life threatening complications — prevention is better. Adult dogs previously not on a heartworm preventive need to be tested prior to starting a prevention program. Thereafter, they need to be tested annually to confirm the program is working.
Unfortunately, there is no approved treatment for infected cats. We offer preventatives for heartworms in cats.
