Get Involved: Join Our Foster Program
Foster care is an incredibly rewarding experience that directly impacts the lives of animals in need. Since we do not operate a physical shelter, the number of pets we can help is limited by the number of foster homes available to care for them. The more loving foster homes we have, the more animals we can rescue and place in forever homes. By providing a temporary, safe, and caring environment, you play a vital role in saving lives. It’s a small time commitment for a huge return, knowing that you’ve helped save an animal’s life.
What Responsibilities Do Foster Parents Have?
As a foster parent, your role involves providing essential care, including housing, training, grooming, transportation to vet appointments and adoption events, and most importantly, love and compassion. Foster parents are key players in the pet adoption process. At Planned PEThood, we ask that you monitor your foster pet’s behavior and health, notifying us if any concerns arise. You’re also your foster pet’s biggest advocate—no one can help get them adopted better than you! Foster pets typically stay with their foster parents until they are adopted, which could range from a few days to several months. We also need short-term relief or quarantine fosters who can commit to 2-3 week periods.
What is Required to Become a Foster Parent?
As part of our commitment to animal welfare, Planned PEThood operates under the Georgia Department of Agriculture, meaning a home inspection is required every six months by one of our representatives. Don’t worry, it’s a simple process (and we’re not checking to see if your dishes are done!).
You’ll also be paired with a mentor who can answer any questions and guide you through the foster care process. Before receiving your foster pet, you’ll be given an overview of our medical protocol to ensure you’re prepared to meet your foster pet’s needs. All routine medical care is provided at our Duluth Spay and Neuter Clinic, and you’ll be responsible for ensuring your foster pet can make it to appointments as needed.
What Does Planned PEThood Provide?
Planned PEThood is committed to offering the highest standard of care for our foster animals. Our dedicated foster home veterinary assistant will support you in managing your foster pet’s medical needs. Planned PEThood covers all necessary vetting, including vaccinations, testing (FeLV/FIV for cats, heartworm for dogs), spay and neuter procedures, deworming, microchipping, and other routine care, ensuring your foster pet stays healthy.
We also provide basic supplies like pet food, crates, litter boxes, collars, leashes, and other essentials to make the fostering experience smooth for both you and the animal.
