Compassion in Action: Over 200 Pets Served at Newton County Outreach Event
Community Outreach
On May 24, 2025, Turner Lake Park in Newton County, Georgia was the site of something truly special. It was a day filled with wagging tails, grateful families, and lifesaving care.
Planned PEThood of Georgia, together with Newton County Animal Services, provided free vaccines, microchips, flea prevention, spay/neuter vouchers and supplies to 234 cats and dogs in need. Petco Love was the event sponsor.
Victoria Burns, Community Outreach Coordinator for Planned PEThood, organized and led the event. “Community members began lining up as early as 6:30 AM for our 10:00 AM start,” she shared. “We were fortunate to have a great location, beautiful weather, and a shaded area to work comfortably with pets and their families. Several attendees told me how much they needed this event and how grateful they were for the free veterinary care.”
“One of the more memorable stories of the day involved a sweet Boxer who came with her dog mom and her three children,” said Victoria. “While they were waiting in line, the dog was stung multiple times by yellow jackets and began to react. Thankfully, Planned PEThood’s own Dr. Joncas was on-site and sprang into action. She quickly assessed the pup, administered an injection to counter the allergic reaction, and monitored her closely for several hours. She made a full recovery and was even able to participate in the vaccine clinic later that day.”

CJ Bentley, Planned PEThood’s CEO, shared “I am thrilled with the success of this year’s Newton County Outreach event, which marked the largest turnout and highest number of animals served in the history of our Newton County outreach efforts. Now in its fourth consecutive year, this milestone reflects the growing impact and continued importance of the program in the community.”
The event was a collaborative effort, powered by staff and volunteers from both Planned PEThood of Georgia and Newton County Animal Services. A special thank-you goes out to the local Newton County veterinarians and veterinary technicians who shared their time and expertise. These include Amy Massey and Keylee Wilson from Monroe Animal Care Hospital, and Nicole Day from Fairview Animal Hospital & East Metro Animal Emergency Clinic.
Providing Outreach for Pets in Need
At Planned PEThood of Georgia, we believe every pet deserves access to essential veterinary care, regardless of location or financial situation. That’s why our outreach team travels across North Georgia to provide critical services to pet owners in need.
Our outreach events are designed to remove barriers to veterinary care in underserved communities, where access to affordable vet services is often limited or non-existent. By offering these free and low-cost services, we ensure that pets receive the care they need to live healthy lives, while also addressing the larger issue of pet overpopulation through accessible spay and neuter programs.
