Job Summary
Under the direction of veterinary staff, ensure effective and efficient processes consistent to Planned PEThood’s standards are upheld. Represent Planned PEThood professionally and responsibly at all locations. Provide excellent pre-, peri- and post-operative care to all surgery patients. Efficiently handle client check-in and check-out. Communicate compassionately and professionally to all customers, coworkers, volunteers, and shelter staff regarding pets’ conditions when necessary. Provide thorough and compassionate examination and treatment for animals.
Primary Job Functions – Mobile Spay/Neuter Surgical Assistance
- Qualify for (minimum of 26 years of age, no moving violations) and safely operate the mobile unit
- Professionally perform check-in and check-out procedures to include accurately accepting payment, processing paperwork, and providing exceptional “go home” instructions and appropriate paperwork
- Maintain an organized and CLEAN environment on the mobile unit – including end of day cleaning procedures
- Under direction of the Veterinarian, evaluate animals pre-op to assist in determining their ability to withstand surgery
- Professionally and compassionately communicate surgical complications, pet deaths, etc. to customers, coworkers, volunteers and shelter staff in a timely manner when necessary
- Work with the surgical team to assist in establishing daily surgical numbers with consideration for animal safety and the organizational budget (minimum of 200 per month)
- Make recommendations to the veterinarian regarding animal statuses
- Assist with surgical sterilizations, following established guidelines for high quality, high-volume procedures
- Perform other medically necessary procedures under guidance of veterinarian while patients are present for surgery.
- Administer various therapeutic measures by IV, IM, SQ, topical, oral routes, etc.
- Prep and intubate (with Veterinary supervision)
- Bandage/wrapping techniques
- Venipuncture techniques
- Swabs
- Proficient animal restraint techniques
- Monitor critical care animals (i.e. place IVs, monitor fluids, etc.)
- Tissue sampling, routine animal manipulations, etc.
- Assist with post-op exams as necessary to ensure appropriate recovery
- Clean surgical instruments, wrap surgical packs and ensure adequate sterilization of surgical instruments.
- Ensure appropriate medical records are maintained.
- Inoculate animals and provide instructions for follow-up care.
- Ensure proper handling and recording of controlled substances
- Ensure accurate and timely record keeping in ClinicHQ, ShelterLuv or other animal data system as appropriate
- Work cooperatively with relief doctors; ensuring appropriate processes are followed by the team
County Shelters

- Assist with surgical sterilizations, following established guidelines for high quality, high-volume procedures
- Assist the Veterinary team to perform other appropriate, medically necessary procedures while patients are present for surgery
- Inoculate animals according to appropriate guidelines
- Provide client education/instructions for follow-up care
- Ensure proper handling and recording of controlled substances
- Ensure accurate and timely record keeping in ClinicHQ or ShelterLuv as appropriate
- Under the direction of a Veterinarian, provide post-op rechecks and report concerns/updates to the Veterinarian.
- Work cooperatively with relief doctors, assistants and other Planned PEThood staff doctors
Secondary Job Duties – Wellness, Minor Sick, Foster and Outreach Support
- Under the direction of the on-site Veterinarian, provide assistance during Outreach events to include:
- Ensuring animal and human safety
- Administering appropriate vaccines/microchips
- Restraining animals
- Assist with check in/check out
- Under the direction of the Wellness/Minor Sick Veterinarian:
- Restrain animals
- Assist with medical record entry
- Communicate results of visit to pets’ families
- Give appropriate vaccines
- Under the direction of the Wellness/Minor Sick Veterinarian:
- Restrain foster animals during appointments
- Communicate effectively with foster parents re: medical condition, next steps, and scheduling
- Ensure appropriate follow up with fosters, the Adoption team as well as in-house barn cats
Other General Duties and Responsibilities
- Safely drive and operate the Fido Fixer mobile unit
- Maintain cleanliness of work areas – sterilizing surfaces and equipment/tools, sweeping, mopping, laundry and trash removal as needed at each location – to include maintaining the mobile unit
- Assist with the monitoring of inventory and coordinate with appropriate staff members to ensure that supplies are ordered in a timely manner.
- Adhere to established protocols for safety, cleanliness, and prevention of disease
- Participate in appropriate staff meetings
- Display a positive attitude and act as a motivating force for all staff members
- Set an example and encourage positive teamwork and cooperation
- Help ensure all surgical staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients
- Communicate any issues concerning personnel or protocol with appropriate member of surgical team and/or your immediate supervisor

Work Environment
The offices and operations of HQHVSN clinics and mobile units and open-admission shelters/municipalities can be high stress and very busy at times. Exceptional teamwork is key. This position requires the individual to be flexible. While your home base/main responsibility is the mobile unit – some workdays may be at one of Planned PEThood’s affiliate/shelter medicine locations. Surgery days typically begin at 7 a.m. Monday – Thursday and end around 5 p.m. Also available are monthly Saturday vaccine clinics and/or fill in days at one of our municipal shelter affiliates. The schedule can change and may sometimes require weekend or evening hours for meetings, training, or events. Planned PEThood is committed to maintaining a work schedule that is satisfactory for individual staff members as well as the overall organization and our communities’ animals and their families.

- Ensure appropriate equipment and consumables are on mobile unit to complete the day’s surgeries
- Thoroughly clean mobile unit at the end of each day

Communicate compassionately and professionally to owners regarding their pet’s condition when necessary. Guide, train, and coach a team of veterinary assistants and technicians. Provide thorough and compassionate examination and treatment for patients, assist in outreach events/vaccine clinics when needed.
Primary Job Functions – Spay & Neuter
- Ensure animal flow through surgery is safe and efficient in accordance with goals
- Work with surgeon, VA team, and Director of Customer Care to establish daily surgical numbers with consideration for animal safety and the organizational budget
- Examine animals pre-op to assist in determining their ability to withstand surgery
- Professionally and compassionately communicate surgical complications, pet deaths, etc. to owners in a timely manner when necessary
- Make recommendations to the veterinarian regarding animal statuses
- Assist with surgical sterilizations, following established guidelines for high quality, high-volume procedures, with a daily goal of at least 30 surgeries per doctor
- Supervise kennel staff to ensure best practice cleaning protocols are upheld and animals are monitored post-surgery
- Conduct regular routine health monitoring and exams based on veterinary team instruction, and ensure the implementation of preventative measures such as vaccinations, anthelmintic treatments, etc.

Work Environment

Surgeries are currently scheduled four days/week, usually Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m. (plus occasional Saturday vaccines clinics); the schedule can change and may sometimes require weekend or evening hours for meetings, training, or events.
